Bottled Water Sales Fall - Are you surprised?

Few weeks ago, I had written a blog post on “Say no to bottled water”. I have some good new to share with all my readers.
According to consulting firm Beverage Marketing Corp., Americans drank 8.7 billion gallons of bottled water last year, compared with 8.8 billion in 2007 - the first decline this decade.
The current recession has forced customers to cut back on bottled water consumption. Also, consumers are becoming more environment conscious and now have discovered that tap water is practically free. Consumers have realized that bottled water industry is wasting natural resources and stuffing landfills with plastic bottles.
Sales of bottled water swelled 59 percent to $5.1 billion between 2003 and 2008, making it one of the fastest- growing beverages. About 70 percent of consumers say they drink bottled water.
Nestle, the country's largest seller of bottled water recently reported that profits for the first half of the year dropped 2.7 percent, its first decline in six years.
In summary, the manufacture and transport of that one kilogram bottle of Fiji water consumed 26.88 kilograms of water (7.1 gallons) .849 Kilograms of fossil fuel (one liter or .26 gal) and emitted 562 grams of Greenhouse Gases (1.2 pounds).
